Introduction: Multiple sclerosis is one of the most common neurologic disorders in young adults ; several new drugs have been introduced for treatment of MS , among these , mitoxantrone , a drug with immunosuppressant and cytotoxic activity used for various cancers has attracted interest ;because one study has shown a slight beneficial effect on the progressive form of the disease .FDA approved Novantrone in October.2000 for reducing neurologic disability and / or frequency of clinical relapse in (SP.MS)
Objectives: To determine Effects of Mitoxantrone on rate of disability(E.D.S.S) in patients with secondary progressive multiple sclerosis from 2002 to 2007 in aria hospital -Mashad-Iran
Materials and method: During 2002-2007 patients with SP-MS who visited in neurologic clinic of Aria general hospital of Mashhad city and had no history of hematologic , cardiac and hepatic disorders or immunosuppressant use were included in our clinical trial study. Patients had their EDDSS score determined before treatment and at the end of the treatment. In addition our study includes side effects of drug like hair loss, urinary infection, nausia and vommiting. After the treatment course (8 infusions)the results of EDDSS score compared and analysed by statistical methods using SPSS and Excell softwares.
Results : 53 patients with SP-MS were included in our study (27 female and 20 male ). 6 patients discontinued treatment , 4 of them disconnect treatment because of progression of disease after 3 injection and 2 of them don’t want to continue treatment. The best results are achieved in patients which their score were< 6.5. patients had a reduce in E.D.S.S. about 0.383.drug was mor effective on women than men .we found no relationship between reducing of E.D.S.S and educations of patients, time between diagnosis of disease and starting mitoxantrone, hair loss, urinary infection, vomiting and nausia.
